In recent years, technological advancements have revolutionised medicine, particularly in orthopaedic surgery. Robotic total hip replacement surgery is an example of how technology enhances treatment outcomes. More and more people in Singapore and Asia are aware of the benefits of this option and have opted for robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery.
Total hip replacement, or total hip arthroplasty (THA), is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased hip joint with an artificial implant. This surgery aims to alleviate pain and improve mobility in patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or hip fractures. Total hip replacements are commonly undertaken due to the progressive deterioration of severe arthritis within the hip joint. Degenerative osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, leading to the majority of THA surgery demand in Singapore. This type of arthritis typically manifests with age, congenital hip joint abnormalities, or individuals with previous hip joint injuries.
Traditionally, total hip replacement surgery is performed manually by orthopaedic surgeons. While effective, manual techniques may have limitations in accuracy and consistency, leading to variations in patient outcomes. Robotic total hip replacement surgery integrates advanced robotics and computer-assisted technology into the surgical process. This robotic approach allows surgeons to plan and execute hip replacement procedures with enhanced precision and control.
There are several benefits of Robotic THA surgery compared to the conventional method:
Before the operation, CT scans of the pelvis and both knees will be requested by your orthopaedic surgeon. These images provide three-dimensional representations of the patient’s hip joint anatomy. The surgeon analyses the CT images to create a personalised surgical plan. This plan includes determining the optimal implant size, placement, and alignment based on the patient’s unique anatomy and pathology.
The robotic total hip arthroplasty procedure is similar to conventional THA surgery. The robotic arm assists the surgeon in executing the preoperative plan accurately, while ensuring optimal implant placement and alignment.
Administration of anaesthesia and doing the incision
Before the surgery begins, the patient is administered general or spinal anaesthesia, depending on the condition and the surgeon’s preference. Once the anaesthesia has taken effect, the surgeon will make a small incision, typically 3-6 inches in length, to access the hip joint. This incision is typically smaller compared to conventional hip replacement surgeries, resulting in less trauma to surrounding tissues and faster recovery time.
Removal of the damaged hip parts and precise placement of the implant
Using precision-guided robotic instruments, the surgeon carefully removes damaged or diseased bone and cartilage from the hip joint. The robotic system provides real-time feedback and assists the surgeon in executing the preoperative plan with sub-millimetre accuracy. With the hip joint prepared, the surgeon precisely positions the artificial implant components, including the femoral stem, acetabular cup, and bearing surface (e.g., metal, ceramic, or polyethene).
Closing of the wound
Once the implants are securely in place, the surgeon closes the incision utilising sutures or staples, and the patient will then be transferred to a recovery area for monitoring and pain management.
Robotic total hip replacement surgery represents a fusion of medicine and technology, offering good precision and personalised care to patients suffering from hip joint disorders. While challenges remain, the promise of improved outcomes, reduced complications, and enhanced patient satisfaction positions robotic hip replacement as an advancement in orthopaedic surgery.

At Alps Orthopaedic Centre, we specialise in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). Performed as a Day Surgery, the ERAS Direct Anterior Approach in Total Hip Replacement (THR) technique as well as ERAS Total Knee Replacement (TKR), reduces the average hospitalisation stay, utilising techniques which enable the patient to suffer from less pain and recover faster. We are an Orthopaedic clinic in Singapore, which specialises in ERAS and do our utmost to enable patients to return to everyday activities as early as possible.
Our Orthopaedic clinic provides specialised diagnosis and effective treatment of musculoskeletal problems, especially Day Surgery / Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) For Hip and Knee Surgery, Sports Injuries and Trauma Fractures. If you are considering hip or knee surgery or minimally invasive treatments, book an appointment with our experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Jerry Chen, for a thorough assessment and treatment plan.
Our aim is to boost patient well-being, optimising every aspect of the surgical journey. By minimising the recovery period, patients are able to go back to activities that they love.
