What is Hip Pain?

Hip pain refers to the discomfort experienced in the region of the hip joint, which is an important structure facilitating various movements like walking and standing. The hip joint’s intricate ball-and-socket arrangement makes it susceptible to various conditions leading to pain. Although hip pain is common, it’s crucial not to disregard it. Early detection of hip problems is essential to prevent complications and improve treatment outcomes. Identifying the exact root cause of hip pain is crucial for effective treatment, as there are numerous potential causes ranging from overuse injuries to conditions like arthritis or bursitis.

Hip anatomy comprises the femur, acetabulum, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and cartilage, forming the joint that connects the thigh bone to the pelvis.

Causes of Hip Pain

Hip pain can arise from a range of factors, including:

  • Osteoarthritis: Degenerative joint disease that wears down the protective cartilage in the hip joint.
  • Hip Fractures: Breaks or cracks in the hip bone, often due to falls or trauma.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint.
  • Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons surrounding the hip joint, typically caused by overuse or repetitive motions.
  • Hip Labral Tears: Tears in the ring of cartilage (labrum) surrounding the hip socket, often seen in athletes or individuals with structural hip abnormalities.

While hip pain typically impacts individuals over the age of 50 and those who are overweight, it can also occur in children due to conditions like Developmental Dysplasia and Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease.

Symptoms of Hip Pain

Recognising the symptoms of hip pain can help in early diagnosis and treatment. Common symptoms include:
  • Pain: Dull aching pain in the hip joint, groin, thigh, or buttocks, worsened by activity.
  • Stiffness: Difficulty moving the hip joint, especially after prolonged periods of rest.
  • Swelling: Visible swelling or tenderness around the hip joint.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Difficulty performing daily activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or bending.
Accurate diagnosis enables tailored interventions to address the underlying problem and alleviate discomfort, facilitating improved mobility and quality of life. In Singapore, individuals suffering from long-lasting hip pain that interferes with daily activities are recommended to see an orthopaedic specialist. They can receive a thorough diagnosis of hip pain at orthopaedic centres, where doctors offer personalised treatment plans based on the confirmed diagnosis and severity.

Treatments for Hip Pain

Depending on the severity of the condition, orthopaedic specialists may recommend various treatment options. These can range from conservative measures like physiotherapy, and anti-inflammatory medication, to interventions such as minimally invasive surgery – arthroscopic procedures for hip labral repair, hip resurfacing or Direct Anterior Approach (DAA) Total Hip in severe cases.
