What feels minor today may return years later as joint degeneration?
In The Straits Times article dated 25 June 2025, Dr Jerry Chen, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at ALPS Orthopaedic Centre, sheds light on a growing trend among his patients:
“Untreated sports injuries—especially ligament tears, cartilage lesions, or meniscus damage—can silently lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis years later.”
These injuries are often downplayed—especially by young adults who feel fine soon after. But as Dr Chen explains, they may trigger a slow, progressive breakdown in the joint that only becomes symptomatic years down the line.
Early assessment matters
Dr Chen strongly advocates for a thorough orthopaedic evaluation in the early stages of injury even when the pain seems to have faded. Timely diagnosis and management can significantly reduce the risk of long-term joint damage.
Common “walked-off” injuries that deserve a second look:
- Ankle sprains with swelling or instability
- Knee injuries during pivoting sports (e.g. meniscus or ACL tears)
- Shoulder dislocations or recurring joint clicks
- Old injuries that continue to “flare up” with activity
